An inviting waterfront for Pudong
Inbo has been active in China for more than a decade, with the first big accomplishment in 2013 when the team of Inbo and NITA won the international competition for the Xinhua waterfront masterplan in the Pudong district of Shanghai, located just 10 minutes walking distance away from the Lujiazui center with its iconic TV tower. This 45hA masterplan was one of the first urban transformation projects on the northern bank of the Huangpu river and it was based on the ‘keep existing values and add new impulses’ approach.
The design embedded reprogrammed characteristic existing buildings in an updated context and approximately 800,000 sqm of new buildings were added. The design introduces a highly sustainable riverside park with ‘green fingers’ that penetrate and interact with the surrounding urban landscape. As such, the impact of the waterfront park extends beyond the first zone along the waterfront and connects all surrounding neighborhoods deeply to the new waterfront.
Our Dutch background with a long history of ‘living with water’ led to an integrated solution to maximize the quality of the riverfront location and at the same time provide the needed protection against flooding at high tide. Inbo/NITA were the instigators of the multi-level landscape approach, which was radically different from the common approach at that time to increase the quay-level.
Together with a marina the park generates unique conditions for exclusive residential and office buildings, shopping malls and leisure. By regenerating the existing heritage buildings of this former harbor and industrial area with cultural functions, the development reflects the emerging re-appreciation and re-use of cultural heritage throughout China. The marina will serve as a catalyst for leisurely use of the river board. People can have a stroll along the river or enjoy the area from the yacht.
