At the end of 2023 the Gorlaeus building that INBO designed in collaboration with SWECO and EX Interiors for the University of Leiden was officially opened.
The second phase of 30,000m2 is the next step to complete the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Science with a total building size of 100,000m2. The new building replaces a collection of old institutes into one contemporary, communicative and open faculty. It facilitates the exchange of knowledge between the various research institutes and between education and research.
The building has a clear comb structure with a building-high open central knowledge exchange axis. This central spine is the main meeting space and connects the different sub-departments and makes it easy for students, teachers and researchers to find their way. Meeting places were a high priority in the building’s design. Each institute has its own wing with a ‘front door’ that opens onto the main hall, which is a meeting place with the café and brasserie. The bordering library, open study spaces, lecture halls, tutor rooms and experiential teaching rooms contribute to the faculty’s character as a ‘gallery of knowledge’.
This phase adds a brand-new main entrance, state of the art high-tech facilities with advanced research equipment, high-grade laboratories, modern lecture halls, canteen and a library to the previously built office spaces, meeting rooms, laboratories, classrooms, study spaces other education related functions.
Besides excellent design features and cutting-edge facilities, sustainability was also high on the agenda of this project. The facades, roof and floors have a high insulation level. And the building is connected to a thermal energy storage system, a sustainable way to heat and cool the building, and will be fitted with 1,150 m2 of solar panels. Although challenging for a building with high-energy consuming functions such as laboratories, it achieved a high-level BREEAM certification, the Dutch sustainability standard.
Gorlaeus will be the home of the Leiden Institute of Physics, the Leiden Institute of Advanced Computer Science, the Institute of Environmental Sciences, the Mathematical Institute, the Leiden institute of Chemistry, the Leiden-Amsterdam Center for Drug Research and the Leiden Observatory.
