Revitalization of an old church: Son and Breugel town hall & culture center
For the bidding to design a new town & culture center, the Son en Breugel community and the city council chose INBO's proposal to regenerate the former church from the 1960s instead of other (demolish and rebuild) concepts.
The church had a distinctive concrete roof shape and unique details that deserve to be preserved for future generations, including the magnificently crafted brickwork in the facade. At the same time, it was introverted and had a dark, ill-lit interior. INBO managed to protect the original details while transforming the interior into a bright and welcoming space by making openings in the facade and integrate roof lights.
In the design we integrated a variety of functions as independent volumes under the striking concrete shed roof. The ground floor has a public foyer that functions as the living room of the community. From here you can access the library, theatre, bar and second floor functions. While the ground floor is very dynamic, the second floor is more quiet, ideal for office spaces, meeting rooms and rehearsal rooms.
To make the building energy neutral, many existing elements and materials were reused, pv-cells were added on the roof and rainwater is collected and used. The space is easily adaptable to different types of uses. More importantly: the citizens love their new-heritage town hall and use it frequently. It became a lively living room that brings people together.
