The client is a leading company practicing Montessori education in Guiyang, China. Their idea is to apply the Montessori philosophy taking advantage of the rich nature for the kids to feel close to nature while learning which will eventually stimulate their growth. So, the challenge was to provide an environment which is well connected with nature and supports the ideals of Montessori learning while having fun.
Montessori education has its own unique set of tools and techniques which when combined with nature can form an ambience stimulating the five senses. The building itself should be a teaching tool. Exterior wall was schemed to incorporate a setting for the kids to understand the concept of quantities and numbers. The dining room extended in the garden outdoors, allowing the sight, sound and smell of nature to be felt indoors. Locally available material finishes were used and also kept as natural as possible so as to develop an understanding of the same amongst the new generation from the very start. The garden play was designed along the lines of the Montessori philosophy. It was kept simple to only let the kids discover, explore, think and hence build creative original experiences by themselves.
