We designed and made a temporary wooden bridge that has a total length of 16 meters and 2.7 meters of height by processing domestic cedar CLT (1M*2M*36MM) with CNC milling machine.
[1]Transportable temporary shelter
The joint pieces are made by the combination of Japanese traditional wood construction method and by applying it with CNC. Each joints are combined by wooden driving plugs, and it can easily be taken down by removing the plugs.
[2]Wooden driving plugs and Wooden framework
We can ignore the compressive strength of the joint parts approximately by adopting an arch to the whole form. Also, by using the wooden driving plugs the shearing force is resisted.
[3] 12 meters Arch
We regard the long side of the cross-sectional shape as parabola and the short side as hyperbola, and by combining it to a saddle-shaped form it opposes the wrench of the entire thing.
[4] Bidirectional curves
The whole bridge is composed by the connection of 8 modules, 2 bases, and one keystone.
[5]The Edge of Module flatpack
The modules are light enough for two people to carry, and each of them are possible to modify it into flatpack by removing the wooden driving plugs. All the modules are no more than 2 meters long, which enable us to carry them in 2tons track.
[6]Two Connected Modules
The loading condition is set to stand one adult. By placing hinged support at the top of the arch, it stimulates the force to apply at the bottom.
[7]Hinged support of the top
The lengths of beam depths change between 800mm at maximum and 200mm at minimum. It is weight saved by changing the partial cross section into parametric.
[8]Material Shapes changed into Parametric
To avoid the base for pouring, we made bases which weights nearly 100kg to the both sides, and place 400l plastic tank to oppose the 500KG horizontal force. By letting out the water, the temporary weight will be gone and it'll be transportable.
[9] Modularized Base
We worked with 8 local resident. The entire assembling and disassembling are finished within one hour. This was placed at public space of Kawasaki prefecture as a symbol of one time only event.
