With the development of the former site of the Naxos abrasives factory in Frankfurt’s district Ostend the high reputed architecture office for housing Stefan Forster Architekten developed a fallow urban industrial land for housing. The design resulted from a procedure for calling in expert opinion in 2008 and convinced with the urban space as building typology implementation and integration of the functional requirements as well as outstanding architectural qualities. The sophisticated new building responds one hand to the different characters of the surrounding streets, as well as on the unique trees along the Wingert road. To protect the trees and not getting too close to them the residential houses is structured in five open courtyards facing the street. The corner building along the Wittelsbacherallee refers to traditional urban spaces, which is conventionally accessible from the street. With spacious balconies the elongated structure creates the reference to historic and protected Naxoshalle in the yard. Inspired by the industrial character of existing buildings a homogeneous clinker plinth is used, which supports the ensemble character and simultaneously connects with the existing buildings.
All of the 67 owner-occupied and 49 apartments for rent are equipped with passive house technologies and thus provide maximum energy efficiency. Even under difficult conditions such as strong shading by surrounding buildings, decoupled loggias, recesses in the building periphery, brick facade along the ground floor, underground parking, etc. a passive house can be realized. It has been shown that passive houses not only comply with the given financial conditions, but also achieve high architectural stylistic elements and thereby exemplify a pioneering urban housing.
