Design Concept
The building's design is guided by the challenges of a tropical coastal climate, with the main facade facing west – the direction receiving the most intense solar radiation throughout the day. Recognizing this as a disadvantage, the architectural approach transforms the climate into a dominant formative language, through a system of concrete wall panels acting as a "climate skin" enveloping the building.
The curved walls not only create a strong visual identity for the hotel but also act as a microclimate buffer, significantly reducing the amount of direct radiation impacting the glass and the interior spaces.
Explanation of the Method
The system of concrete panels is arranged in a way that rotates like wings catching the sea breeze or moving waves. The geometric forms help to limit concentrated heat absorption while creating continuously changing voids throughout the day.
The wall panels act as passive sun walls (passive sunshades), blocking the afternoon sun from the west, reducing direct radiation onto the glass system, thereby reducing the load on the air conditioning system and improving the building's energy efficiency.
Between the classrooms are open spaces that allow for natural ventilation, bringing sea breezes through the facade, creating a breathable buffer before the air enters the functional spaces.
Post-ventilation effect
The facade design is based on the principles of modern tropical architecture, combining three solutions simultaneously:
Reducing direct radiation with a system of sun-shading walls with significant depth.
Enhancing ventilation through the gaps between the layers of the facade.
Incorporating greenery on balconies, comfortable courtyards, and openings in the facades to cool the building's surface through the process of water vapor injection and shading.
The tiered green system helps reduce the surface temperature of the concrete, improves air quality, and provides a sense of closeness to nature for users.
Architectural Language
The architecture adopts a minimalist style with the main materials being exposed concrete, glass, and greenery. The concrete retains its natural color to achieve material authenticity, while creating a contrast with the green of the vegetation and the coastal sky.
The large curves of the facades create softness and balance with the square shapes of the hotel rooms behind. During the day, the wall surfaces create a rich effect of light and shadow with depth; at night, the light from within highlights the space between the layers of the shell, giving the building the image of a lantern in the city.
Functional Explanation
The concrete shell is separated from the main room block, forming a buffer zone that reduces direct heat transfer to the interior space. The guest rooms offer expansive views through balconies and large glass windows, while maintaining privacy thanks to the pre-existing sunshade.
Green intermingling between floors enhances the resort experience and improves the overall climate of the building.
Sustainability
Guiding the principles of architectural sustainability by prioritizing conscious solutions before implementing system mechanisms:
