The design team blended the modern rear addition with the traditional, existing structure at the street front of the home. A gently sloping lot allowed AB design studio to ensure that the front-facing façade retained its neighborhood scale, while permitting the addition of larger, more expressive volumes to the rear, hidden from plain sight at street level. The client’s desire for an indoor/outdoor dining room led to the home’s signature feature of operable, floor-to-ceiling bi-folding glass doors that, when open, create an open-air atmosphere while allowing for common areas to engage with exterior spaces. The architects added a master suite to the second level that separates the space from the children’s areas below. A floor-to-ceiling glass wall offers unobstructed views of the backyard and beyond from the master bedroom. An outdoor deck, accessible from the master bath, provides an added private space for relaxing. Outside, a living wall shields a portion of the existing home’s front unit, providing privacy for the back unit while modernizing the home.
