Veðurhæð (Weather Hill) Urban Village is the competition-winning proposal for the “Green Housing of the Future – Veðurstofuhæð Site” development in Reykjavík. Designed in 2022, the masterplan reimagines the site as a sustainable, community-oriented neighbourhood that reconnects surrounding districts through green infrastructure, shared spaces, and people-centred urban design.
In an era shaped by digital lifestyles, social isolation, and increasingly unpredictable climate conditions, our need for connection to nature, to place, and to one another, has never been greater.
Veðurhæð Urban Village is envisioned as a welcoming, green neighbourhood that fosters a strong sense of community through shared spaces, collaboration, and sustainable living. The proposal reconnects the surrounding districts of Öskjuhlíð, Hlíðar, Leiti, and Kringlan, creating a vibrant neighbourhood where people can establish a home and become part of an active local community. Veðurhæð serves as both a destination and a connecting link between these existing urban areas.
The masterplan encourages a sustainable lifestyle founded on shared resources and community-oriented amenities. Residents are supported in making environmentally conscious choices through everyday solutions that improve quality of life rather than requiring fundamental lifestyle changes. By bringing together a diverse mix of residents, businesses, and institutions, Veðurhæð creates the conditions for a resilient, forward-looking neighbourhood built on collaboration, inclusion, and environmental responsibility.
Throughout the development, green spaces and the surrounding landscape play a central role in everyday life. Nature is woven into the urban fabric, encouraging healthy living, outdoor activity, and a stronger relationship between people and their environment. Veðurhæð is conceived as a place that nurtures both the landscape and the wellbeing of its community.
Connecting Neighbourhoods:
Veðurhæð presents a unique opportunity to bridge the physical divide between neighbouring districts that are currently separated by major traffic corridors. The future Borgarlína rapid transit line will run alongside the development, further strengthening sustainable mobility and reducing dependence on private cars while enhancing connectivity across the city.
