Hvammar is a year-round home in South Iceland, designed to accommodate three generations living together – parents, three grown-up children and grandchildren – and to maintain a strong connection to the surrounding landscape. The project focuses on a good flow between indoor and outdoor spaces, creating a home that is both functional and inspiring for family life.
The clients approached us through the contractor, after seeing one of our previous projects that we had done for them. They liked the open floor plan that we had designed, which served as the starting point of Hvammar.
The brief was to provide for family interaction in the heart of the home: a large central common open space hosting the living room, kitchen, and dining area, while allowing each generation to maintain its own private areas.
We designed a cross-axial plan, with the central common space at the intersection of the axes, and the bedroom wings extending along the longitudinal axis in open hallways.
The living room opens southward through a large floor-to-ceiling window, offering views of the mountains and the bush-grown plot, while the kitchen, organised around a large island, faces north, framing the entrance and the distant peaks. The family requested to have a play-loft above the kitchen for the youngest children, visually connected to the main living area below through an indoor window. The interior dining area opens to a terrace, connecting to the outdoor dining area.
Flanking the central space are two wings, each containing two spacious bedrooms and a bathroom, with direct access to the garden. The rooms are large enough to accommodate a bunk bed, home office or an extra bed according to what each part of the family needs. At the end of each hallway, a large window reinforces the visual and spatial connection with the outdoors along the bedroom axis.
Hvammar’s orientation and placement on the north west of the plot were carefully considered to preserve existing trees and maximize natural light throughout the day. The family wanted to preserve the nature for discovery and play for the children. Floor-to-ceiling windows establish strong visual connections to the landscape in all directions, allowing the family to experience nature from nearly every corner of the house. Views of Ingólfsfjall to the south and Búrfell to the north guided the overall layout and the positioning of the home.
For the interior design of the central common space we chose natural colours that emphasise the abundant daylight flowing into the house, creating warmth and a pleasant atmosphere, combined with deep, calming tones in the private spaces. The family completed the interior finishes themselves following our guidelines, reflecting our initial vision for a home that balances functionality, comfort, and connection to nature.
The collaboration with the family was integral to the project’s success. It was a pleasure to work closely with them, understanding their needs and desires, ensuring that Hvammar meets their requirements for a home that supports shared activities, privacy, and long-term living. The result is a harmonious residence that connects three generations with each other, their surroundings, and the natural environment.
