Bíldudalskóli is a new school and kindergarten located in the heart of Bíldudalur, a village on the coast of Arnarfjörður in the Westfjords of Iceland. The new building sits by the fjord and was designed to provide children with a welcoming, healthy, and inspiring environment for learning and play.
The old school, located on the mountain slope at the highest point of the village, faced challenges including the risk of landslides and the need for costly repairs due to indoor climate issues. Moving to this new site offered a more secure and sustainable solution for the community, while the old school building will be given a new purpose. The new location brings the school and sports facility together on one site, making daily activities more convenient and accessible for the children.
The main concept behind the design is community and a healthy learning environment: creating spaces that support both teaching and learning, where students can thrive in close relation to nature. At the center of the building is a shared space with views across the fjord, filling the heart of the school with natural light. Here, children enjoy their meals, and communal activities can take place, encouraging connection and a sense of togetherness.
Bíldudalskóli is designed to integrate seamlessly with its surroundings. The building connects the village, mountains, and coastline, taking advantage of the fjord’s sunniest side and its unobstructed views. Large windows and thoughtful spatial planning ensure abundant daylight throughout, creating a healthy and inspiring environment for learning.
The building is single-storey to respect the low-rise scale of the village. Timber cladding and a green roof help it sit naturally in the landscape, blending with the mountains and fjord. From the main street above, the green roof is the dominant view, helping the school merge gently into its surroundings.
The building is custom-designed but constructed using prefabricated timber elements. The prefabrication was carried out in a controlled factory environment, ensuring that the building materials remained protected from weather and moisture during construction. This approach guaranteed high quality and precision—for example, in window installation and airtightness—while still allowing efficient and smooth on-site assembly. Close collaboration between designers, engineers, and builders made the project run effectively and cohesively.
Inside, the interior design focuses on natural materials such as oak in the furniture and linoleum flooring, creating a calm and warm atmosphere. The color scheme is soft and inspired by the surrounding nature, reinforcing a sense of harmony and well-being. In the main hall at the center of the building, the acoustic solution has an artistic character—its form and pattern inspired by the mountains surrounding Bíldudalur.
Bíldudalskóli is now a modern, friendly, and nurturing place for children of all ages. It reflects the community’s care for the next generation and demonstrates how thoughtful design, teamwork, and attention to both people and place can create a school that truly belongs to its village.
