The University of Southern California’s new home for the Dick Wolf Drama Center is the adaptive reuse of the campus’ historic 1931 United University Church. The project transformed the building by adaptively reusing the sanctuary and portions of the lower level as performance spaces adding spaces for collaboration, including rehearsal and backstage areas, teaching and student facilities, and offices. Original cast stone details, heavy timber trusses and original light fixtures in the sanctuary were carefully rehabilitated to ensure a visual of new meeting old, paying homage to the original use of the space, with all new insertions extremely modern and crisp in detailing. The project is awaiting LEED Platinum confirmation and, if achieved, the building would become a case study across the nation for properly balancing sustainability and historic structures, demonstrating that historic buildings can be made highly sustainable.
