The wrestling training center reflects both the heritage and aspirations of the university’s storied wrestling program. Located just south of the competition arena, it connects via a tunnel inspired by the ancient Ludus Magnus—Rome’s gladiator training ground—reinforcing a symbolic and functional link between preparation and performance.
Architecturally, the building emphasizes clarity, continuity, and discipline. The weathered zinc and perforated metal cladding express strength, while the glazed lobby offers a transparent and welcoming arrival. Inside, the upper level houses coaches’ offices, team lounges, and a spacious lobby celebrating both men’s and women’s programs. Coaches’ offices overlook the mat area, offering a dramatic view that plays a key role in recruiting, often serving as an informal setting for prospective athlete meetings.
The lower level anchors the training experience with an 8,000-square-foot mat space, flanked by locker rooms, strength training, and recovery areas—all seamlessly integrated into the athletic workflow.
The interior captures the grit and determination of the wrestling mindset through raw, honest materials. Exposed structural elements communicate strength, while rugged material choices include nothing beyond what is essential. Self-finishing materials like concrete and metal are durable and do their job without decorative flourishes.
The center is a training facility and a living representation of a proud wrestling dynasty, engineered to foster the next generation of champions. Through thoughtful materiality, symbolic gestures, and athlete-first planning, it affirms its goal: to become the best training facility in college wrestling.
