UNI-CENTER, Hanyang University Student Union Renovation
The existing Student Union of Hanyang University, located along the main pedestrian axis connecting the subway station, main building, and welfare center, was renovated into “UNI-CENTER,” a welfare-oriented community hub for students. The project aimed to revitalize the aging facility into a bright and open space that supports both rest and communication.
The design blurs the boundary between the exterior plaza and the interior, allowing campus circulation to flow naturally through the building. Curved finishes extending from columns to ceilings soften the atmosphere and create a warm spatial character. Inside, warm-toned materials and linear lighting accentuate continuity and lightness, while functional rest zones were placed along the flow of movement.
The previously dark terrace was reimagined as an outdoor lounge, featuring metal louvers, linear lighting, and vivid green furniture. It now functions as an extension of the interior and as an intermediary zone that connects the student union with the campus plaza. Through these interventions, UNI-CENTER restores the building’s sense of place and redefines it as a central node of campus life, where students can gather, relax, and engage with one another freely.
