With ambitious architectural standards, LINK Arkitektur has designed a new mixed-use block at Masthuggskajen. It will become a vibrant urban quarter where housing, commercial spaces, and workplaces converge in one of Gothenburg’s most attractive locations.
Masthuggskajen is Gothenburg’s central urban development area, where a new peninsula reconnects the city with the river. Here, we are designing an 18-storey building along Första Långgatan, adjacent to Masthuggstorget.
The project is a three-dimensional property division in which Riksbyggen and Elof Hansson Fastigheter share the property horizontally. The building volume is divided into two staggered structures, supporting the street’s character while ensuring excellent daylight and views. At ground level, restaurants, cafés, and shops will add to a lively street life. Facing the new Masthuggsparken, outdoor seating will benefit from morning to evening sun exposure. The offices are designed with generous terraces overlooking the city pulse, seamlessly connecting ground floors with the street.
The building will also offer some of Gothenburg’s finest rental and tenant-owned apartments, most of them bright corner units. From rooftop terraces, sheltered loggias, and spacious balconies, residents will enjoy sweeping panoramic views of the harbour and the city.
Sweden’s Tallest Building with a Reused Brick Façade
The new Masthuggskajen block, The Parkside, will feature a façade clad in reused brick – making it the tallest building in Sweden to do so. The design features a combination of reused brick, brass, and timber detailing. The bricks are salvaged from demolished buildings, then tested, cleaned, and CE-marked in the same way as newly manufactured materials. The key difference: reused brick reduces carbon emissions by 96% compared to new production – and comes with a beautiful patina as a bonus.
Great architecture is sustainable in every sense of the word. Social sustainability can mean activating ground floors to create street life and safety, as well as offering a mix of housing types. The Parkside is a mixed-use development, blending rental apartments, condominiums, offices, and commercial spaces under one brick façade, with equal attention to detail. This mix is essential for a genuine and inclusive city. Design is also a matter of sustainability: the most sustainable building is the one that is loved and therefore preserved.
