The initial concept was that each of the 39 rooms would be themed around one of the 12 wonders of the world. That concept faded away due to financial constraints, Apel said, but the oblique angles and varying color schemes will stay. This move was driven by Apel’s shock at another aspect of American architecture – the oppressive similarity of hotel rooms across geographies and even levels of luxury.
“The disorientation and bright colors were the emphasis,” Apel said.
Besides the angles and the color schemes, the other remnant of the world-wonders theme will be graphic narratives strategically positioned in the bathroom.
“I figure, where is the place that you’re going to be reading in a hotel?” Apel said.
Moment is set to open in May 2013.
