Tehran Theater Garden
The Tehran Theater Garden project is being constructed in the Abbasabad district of Tehran, with a total built-up area of 12,000 square meters. This area hosts several major culture and art projects of the city and is one of Tehran’s key tourist and recreational centers.
The city’s need for expanding theatrical venues, a theater museum, and garden theaters played a crucial role in shaping this project. The site’s steep slope allowed for two separate access points—one from the upper pathway and one from the lower. The main mass of the project emerges from the hillside and sits across two smaller mounds. On the upper level, the continuation of the existing greenery and the expansion of the park surface across the project’s roof create the Theater Garden itself. Pedestrian access from within the park leads directly into the building, while another entrance on the lower level serves mid-project access and technical or service functions.
The project’s spatial organization includes several black box theaters of large, medium, and small scales, offering a wide variety of settings for different performances. Escape routes are carefully planned to allow the rapid evacuation of large numbers of visitors in minimal time. Between the black box structures, facility and technical spaces, exhibition and event areas, and museum sections emerge, forming a sequence of interconnected public zones.
The interplay of light and shadow brings the dramatic atmosphere of the project to life. Skylights from the upper levels channel natural light deep into the building, lending a unique luminance to the darker, lower spaces. Structurally, the project uses curved concrete shells that merge seamlessly with the architectural forms. This integration of structure and space encourages visitors to explore diverse and unexpected areas—a spatial experience evoking intuition and sensory discovery.
An open-air amphitheater, featuring an eye-catching structure, becomes an integral part of the project. It creates a dialogue between the complex and one of Tehran’s busiest highways, turning performance and art into a visible conversation between the city and the project. This setting opens broad views over Tehran and fosters a dynamic connection infused with creativity and artistic expression.
