Tan An House is the renewal of a garden house that carries the strong architectural character of Southeast Vietnam. The project respects traditional values while carefully introducing new elements that harmonize with the existing space.
The house was renovated from a traditional garden house with two parts: the front house, used as the worship space, and the rear house, which served as the main living area of the family.
During the renovation process, the design team decided to keep the entire front house and renew the rear part to better fit modern living. The design still maintains traditional Vietnamese living patterns, such as spaces for family gatherings during death anniversaries, Tet holidays, or casual visits from neighbors - activities that create the warm atmosphere typical of a Southern Vietnamese home.
After the renovation, the spatial organization became clearer in terms of function, while ensuring good ventilation and maximizing natural light. Since the main shared spaces are located on the west side, the chosen design solution was to bring natural light from the roof.
The opening area was carefully calculated, with a skylight placed above the kitchen, which is also the main family gathering space. Here, the light from above creates a view toward the sky, allowing residents to sense the passage of time throughout the day.
In Vietnamese culture, living spaces are often flexible and highly connected. Therefore, the separation between spaces is softened and does not rely on walls or doors. Instead, changes in floor materials and floor levels are used to define different functional areas. This approach makes the interior spaces feel more open, spontaneous, and interactive.
Materials in the house were carefully selected to recall the spirit of the old home. The dark blue patterned cement tiles were preserved and combined with more contemporary tones, while the ceiling is painted in a terracotta color that recalls traditional clay roof tiles. Each material detail carries not only aesthetic value but also traces of time, connecting the present with memory and the house’s history.
Tan An House reflects a careful and respectful approach to preserving traditional culture, while also opening a new direction where the past and the future coexist within the same living space.
