The existing 1970´s school was transformed into a complete primary school by adding a new extension containing learning spaces for students aged 7-12 and a new lunch hall, as well as a gymnasium. In the early concept design phase, there were some challenges to be tackled, such as connections to the old building and the constrains of the plot. After carefully studying the spatial connections and analyzing the site, we decided on the placement and distribution of the program on site. Our solution was to build three floors in order to preserve as much yard space as possible and to maximize usable outdoor space between the various buildings while creating logical functional connections to the existing building and protecting the school yard from vehicle traffic. Together with the site limitations, these conditions gave birth to a gently meandering form, whereas the slowly patinating Cor-Ten cladding and horizontal window composition with aluminum details were inspired by the surrounding 1970´s context. The sports field and gymnasium with its dedicated entrance were situated on the site in a way that, while part of the school, enables them to also serve the larger community during evening hours.
Interior architecture is composed of a modifiable series of classrooms that can be freely separated and combined by opening and closing the moveable walls between them. Smaller nooks are used for individual tasks or smaller group work as well for leisurely activities between classes. Internal traffic in the building focuses mostly around the main restaurant and auditorium space that links the old and new buildings together – a busy hub created by bridges and vertical connections. We have used generous amounts of wood and bright colors to create an inspiring school interior. Textile flooring and acoustic ceilings and wall coverings are there to create pleasant spaces quiet enough for concentrating in when needed.
Thematically, we strived to bring together different age groups and teachers from different schools. In concrete terms, we aspired to combine vital functions and the elements from different architectural eras into an interesting building.
