A new residential neighbourhood has sprung up in Lidköping, next to lake Vänern. This is where Sjölunda School serves as a key function of the local community, as a school but also as a meeting place for club activities.
The school building was designed to reinforce the school’s identity as a sustainable operation and to allow for teachers to utilize the surrounding nature. The building relates to the surrounding forest through well-planned win-dow placement and material choices, with explicit visual connections to the surrounding nature – wood, tiles and green roofs. Sustainable management and durability have permeated the project, which is certified in accordance with the Sweden Green Building Council’s silver rating.
The school is divided into four different teaching environments, which can be shared for greater flexibility. The teach-ing environments are each located on their own side of the building’s central section, which houses a square, library and subject-based classrooms for music, craft, natural science etc. The format is based on a module for modern teaching environments, created by LINK arkitektur. The school canteen is located in the north wing and its kitchen is shared with Sjölunda preschool and a sports centre which is shared for local club activities is located in the south of the schoolgrounds.
Although the school is designed for 350 students, it can be reconfigured to a secondary school and/or house an extra parallel class when needed.
