Many languages and differing sizes of student classes led to different classroom sizing than in more standard schools. Sami culture and a very beautiful nature along the banks of Juutua-river as well as the arctic night were starting points in designing this building. This building also included the local health clinic.
Form, materials and details are derived from the Sami culture, specifically its arts and crafts called Duodji. Spatial hierarchy is achieved by dividing the program into three wings that spread toward Juutua-river and Lappish nature creating a central restaurant/lobby space in between. Slowly growing pine trees were spared during design and construction and bind the building into the nature and history of its environment.
