The compact extension is positioned at the northern corner of the existing primary school. Its form results from both the spatial continuity of the existing school corridor and the need for group rooms directly adjacent to the classrooms. The extension, acting as a head building, forms the volumetric end of the complex and creates a spatial connection to the sports hall. The covered schoolyard stretches between the two.
The building program includes two classrooms and four group rooms, as well as a multi-purpose room and a workroom with storage in the basement. The existing building's built-in fixtures, which filled the corridor, were removed to ensure access to the extension. The wide, multifunctional, and well-lit hallway opens onto the playground. Seating niches in the hallway furniture serve as quiet spaces and study areas for the students. A disabled toilet, an externally accessible toilet and an elevator complete the renovated restrooms on the ground floor, as do additional restrooms on the upper floor. The staff room and offices are located in the former caretaker's apartment and are now directly accessible from the upper-floor hallway.
The noisy and messy work on the existing building was carried out during the summer holidays, while the remaining work was completed while school was in session. The construction method is very environmentally friendly and sustainable. The basement's exterior walls and the foundation slab are made of recycled concrete. The ceiling above the basement, like the upper floors, is constructed with prefabricated wooden elements. The exterior cladding consists of vertical slats and boards, and the interior cladding of large plywood panels.
