As a part of St. Paul Public Schools (SPPS) Envision program, Barack and Michelle Obama School will be updated to include a new pre-kindergarten through eighth grade school on the existing campus. The dual program school will include both a pre-kindergarten through fifth grade Montessori school for elementary age children and a sixth through eighth grade Middle School based on SPPS experiential middle school teaching model.
Snow Kreilich Architects led community engagement sessions through the lens of both the Montessori and middle school programs for a combined campus that serves ages pre-K through eighth grade. Working in partnership with the SPPS team, a steering committee was formed and meetings were facilitated to develop a project that meets the educational and community goals for the new dual program school.
The project consists of three buildings: the east tower built in 1925, the west tower built in 1926, and the central building connecting the two towers which was completed in 1975. To accommodate the expanded programming to serve the new educational programming, the project included an extensive renovation and building additions. Campus safety and security upgrades included the demolition and construction of a new secure entry vestibule at the main entrance, along with simplified interior corridors and controlled exits and entrances to the facility. An expansion of the east tower increases classroom space for the Montessori program. An addition at the west tower improves middle school student connection to new interactive outdoor learning space and the adjacent park. Interior renovations include updates to the kitchen, full replacement of mechanical, electrical and A/V equipment, and updated finishes.
