The renovation of Instituto Cultural Remanso requalifies a 1930s house located in the Independência neighborhood of Porto Alegre, transforming a historic building into a space dedicated to art, creation, and collective experiences. The project addresses the challenge of preserving the identity of the existing structure while incorporating new contemporary uses, highlighting original elements and establishing a dialogue between memory and transformation. On the façade, the relationship between past and present is expressed through the contrast between the exposed original brickwork and the new blue curved metalwork, an element inspired by the concept of “remanso” that organizes the entrances and gives identity to the institution.

The intervention creates an integrated spatial experience in which architecture, art, and landscape continuously interact. The exhibition spaces, artist studios, and shared areas were designed with flexibility to accommodate different cultural expressions, while the courtyard becomes the central element for gathering, permanence, and collective experiences. The connection between the auditorium and the outdoor area expands the boundaries between interior and exterior, reinforcing the Institute’s role as an open space for creation, contemplation, and cultural exchange.
