The renovation of the Posner Center for Special Collections reimagined the former Board of Trustees conference center as a dedicated exhibition and research facility for Carnegie Mellon University Libraries The project consolidates special collections storage, research, and exhibition functions together under one roof.
Designed to accommodate daily research, special events, and rotating exhibitions of varying scales, the facility incorporates a range of flexible and purposeful spaces. These include a reconfigurable exhibition hall, instruction and reading rooms, a digitization lab, an AV multimedia studio, dedicated researcher work areas, and secure collections storage rooms with temperature and humidity controls.
This renovation updates the original 2005 building while maintaining its organic forms, craftsmanship, and detailing. The resulting design creates an environment in which both the architecture and the special collections are given equal prominence, showcasing the University’s significant holdings of rare books, manuscripts, artwork, and early scientific instruments.
