Nurturing a strong sense of community and civic pride within the vibrant West Villages, the newly constructed City of North Port Safety Building serves as a focal point at the entrance to Downtown Wellen. This campus-style structure seamlessly integrates fire rescue and police facilities from east to west, united by a central public entrance plaza and lobby. Its architectural design balances permanence and airiness, employing a combination of brick, stucco, and glass elements. Playful interpretations of pike poles, integral to firefighting, adorn prominent roof features. Spanning 24,000 square feet along Tamiami Trail at the intersection with Preto Boulevard, the building's corner showcases striking red firehouse doors. Inside, a glass-encased display room houses a 1946 Seagrave fire truck, serving as a tribute to the storied history of North Port Fire Rescue and illuminating the night sky.
Situated on the eastern side of Preto Boulevard, Station 86 offers office spaces, sleeping quarters, and support facilities for both the City of North Port and Sarasota County within this shared facility. A dedicated stair tower facilitates training activities such as rappelling, ladder exercises, and hose drills, providing personnel with on-site practice opportunities. Adjacent to the tower lies a spacious four-bay apparatus room, designed to accommodate rescue vehicles and fire trucks. Illuminated by natural sunlight, the nearly 6,000 square feet of bay space feature striking red metal and glass doors, prominently displaying the names of the vehicles above.
Just beyond the apparatus room, the entrance drive leads the public to the main entrance facing south, offering a panoramic view of the entire campus. Stretching from left to right are prominent features including the rescue helipad, a 1,600 square foot police garage for support equipment, designated parking areas for police, fire, visitors, and the Safety Building itself, all centered around a reflective Hero Plaza. Throughout the facility, tributes to the men and women who have served are integrated, honoring their dedication and accomplishments. Adjacent to Hero Plaza stands the grand main entrance and covered gathering area. Inside the public lobby, a 1,000 square foot training room and fitness facility are shared by the fire rescue and police departments. To the right, facilities such as the kitchen, dining area, and aforementioned fire rescue quarters can be found. On the left side are reception, offices, meeting rooms, roll call spaces, and support facilities for the police department. Additionally, a 1,400 square foot area is being prepared for anticipated expansion, ensuring the community's needs are met amidst ongoing growth.
Characterized by its efficient layout, use of high-quality materials, and a dignified presence, the new North Port Public Safety Building pays homage to the past while embracing the future. Designed to operate seamlessly for first responders and department staff, it stands ready to serve the dynamic needs of the flourishing West Villages community for generations to come.
