The 24,600-square-foot addition and 14,000-square-foot include a new competition “cold” pool, a renovated community “warm” pool, a new public connecting corridor, locker room renovations, coaches’ offices, and meeting/storage space.
The new south “cold” pool can accommodate a 25-yard, 25-meter, or water polo course. Its mezzanine seats close to 500. The diving well offers a diving platform, three diving boards, a video recording system, and viewing stations. A movable bulkhead safely separates swimming and diving events.
Renovations enlarge and deepen the north pool, now equipped with efficient lighting and mechanical systems. This “warm” pool will host a year-round community competitive swim program, and community learn-to-swim programs.
A concourse area between the pools offers a meeting/teaching area, coaches’ offices with views to both pools, storage, and deck space for training.
A dramatic curved form draws attention to the addition. The highest point of the curve marks the balcony, which will hold approximately 500 spectators. At the low point of the curve is the pool deck where athletes congregate. The roof extends past the south wall to form a canopy over the sidewalk next to the facility and shade the south clerestory glass.
The gray blend of the exterior face brick contextually complements the existing facility’s masonry. Extensive use of glass on the north facade draws attention to the addition and the school’s gymnastics program, while the translucent glass of the east and west facades transforms the facility into a glowing beacon for nighttime activities.
Design and construction also fed into Niles North High School’s architecture and engineering class curriculum. Bi-weekly tours focused on topics that the class was studying.
The center is slated to become the first facility of its kind in Illinois to achieve LEED for Schools Gold certification from the US Green Building Council.
