Located in the Theater District, the former Jones Plaza was an inaccessible urban heat island inaccessible despite sitting at Downtown Houston’s cultural core. Surrounded by the Alley Theatre, Houston Symphony, Houston Ballet, and Jones, the site lacked a central public space that connected these institutions and supported activity beyond performances. Recognizing this opportunity, Houston First Corporation reimagined Jones Plaza as a programmable civic destination that drives activity and responds to Hurricane Harvey's devastating 2017 floods through resilience strategies that align with Houston's 500-year elevation plan.
Through extensive collaboration with stakeholders, including Houston First Corporation, Discovery Green, Buffalo Bayou Partnership, and Market Square, RIOS conducted a comprehensive discovery process to understand downtown Houston's recreational and cultural landscape. The findings informed a placemaking strategy inspired by Urban Choreography, translating performing arts movements into spatial design. Choreographed pathways within a new open lawn position the square as connective tissue between cultural venues and encourages spontaneous movement. Four flexible performance configurations support scheduled programming and impromptu performances. The design replaces 19% of hardscaping with shaded greenery, featuring native plants, mature live oaks, and an immersive water feature to mitigate extreme heat.
The transformed Lynn Wyatt Square achieves 92% increased plantings, 60% increased seating capacity and introduces ADA accessibility at four entry points. Operated by Houston First Corporation, the park brings equitable access to the arts in the public realm through music, theatre, dance, film, opera, and art programs. Four distinct zones —Gateway Gardens, Center Green, Cascading Fountain, and Garden Walkway —are equipped with scalable electrical, audio, and video infrastructure to support a cyclical rhythm of activities for the district's nearly two million annual visitors. Since opening in September 2021, Lynn Wyatt Square has become the Theater District's exclusive outdoor performance venue and an active public space for Downtown Houston.
