Today, work spaces are progressively encroaching on domestic spaces. A professional
photographer and creative sought out Future Simple to help him delineate these spheres within
his fully open loft in Old Montreal. The resulting Mezzanine offers a contemporary take on the
boudoir: an intimate environment for rest, restoration and renewed inspiration.
The Mezzanine encompasses a tranquil studio space, storage and sleeping area. But at first
glance, the purpose of the structure is a mystery — appearing as a dark, alluring grid-like
volume. An opening, aligned with the soaring loft windows, offers a stage for objects from the
artist’s personal collection. The minimal design conceals abundant storage and closet space
that is incorporated on the perimeter of the structure. A stainless steel volume emerges from the
ceiling and reveals a transportive staircase that leads to the bed on the second level.
The entire structure is dominated by an atmosphere of mindfulness. A calming feeling of being
amidst trees is evoked by the rich forest green stain of the bespoke structure made of cherry
plywood. A moodiness fills the space in the day while thoughtful low lamps glow with shadows
at night. The Mezzanine allows one to disconnect, regenerate and foster creativity.
