Description
La Maruca López de Hoyos
If, in the past, the city of Madrid had its own beach — on the banks of the Manzanares River and just ten minutes by bus from Puerta del Sol — today the new La Maruca restaurant sketches a nautical club in the very heart of the capital, paying tribute to great Rationalist architectural jewels of Santander such as the Sailing School “Isla de Torre” and the Royal Maritime Club.
Through a process of abstraction, the project plays with the duality between exterior and interior, generating outdoor spaces within indoor environments and recreating open, nautical atmospheres in which the sea can be sensed, though never seen. Through the use of ribbons or bands, the interior volumetry is shaped and expressed through multiple façades, soft curves, and welcoming forms, inviting visitors to stroll and observe, like a kind of pilgrimage through landscape and traditional imagery from the Cantabrian city.
The materiality of the project is closely linked to its coastal and maritime character: teak nautical wood with black polymer joints — typically used on boat decks — is employed as flooring in circulation areas; light micro-terrazzo with earth-toned minerals is used for dining room floors; polished white cement finishes all the volumes composing the interior building; teak wooden slats define all vertical elements of the project, such as columns and pillars; finally, smooth white ceilings with a very high level of acoustic absorption complete the space.
Particular attention should be given to the interior treatment of the ribbons and volumes that shape the building: these were executed using matte white ceramic tiles measuring 5 x 40 cm, model Equipe Evolution. The extreme slenderness of the tile and its vertical placement allow the cladding to adapt perfectly to the curved profiles of the multiple volumes, providing a richly textured character. Through a careful study of the project’s horizontal lines and layout, a clear order is established that helps harmonize the project and clarify the understanding of the space.
Another highly characteristic element of the project is its bathrooms, elevated on a structure that extends beyond the limits of the premises and projects into the outdoor terrace like a pier — a highly recognizable element that imbues the exterior space with character. The bathrooms — or cabins — are designed using only two elements, both suitable for cladding soft, organic architectures: teak wooden slats and a ceramic semicircular baseboard matching the width of the slats, using the Dynamic Arch model by Natucer, measuring 15 x 30 cm.
Thanks to the four orientations of the premises, the restaurant envelope is fully 360º. Large fixed glass panes, conceived as a transparent box, maximize permeability and allow clear and uninterrupted views of the interior volumes from every point of the surrounding urban environment. Through an integrated system of sliding wooden panels, the restaurant can achieve different degrees of privacy and solar protection.
At the center of the maritime building, visible to all passersby both inside and outside the restaurant, lies its spectacular open kitchen. Nothing is concealed. Like the engine room of a ship, it is fully exposed in an exercise of confidence in the team and transparency toward the customer. Stainless steel — reliable and immutable — becomes the absolute protagonist.
