Winter-season tourism in Lapland was rising sharply and managing the seasonal flow of tourists was becoming challenging. To improve the capacity, Finavia decided to extend the Non-Shengen terminal of the Kittilä airport. Three new gates were built as well as new passport checkpoints, café and children's playarea. In addition, new spaces were built for operative functions such as departing luggage and apron buses. This project was fast-paced, since the new terminal had to be operational for the next winter season. This was achieved with project management contract and just-in-time design. Airy, modern terminal was finished in just 10 months including design and construction.
