Located in the heart of the Naskapi community's reserve, the brand new Kawawachikamach police station embodies a public safety project perfectly adapted to the values, needs, and climatic and territorial constraints of this Indigenous community.
Facing significant functional and physical deficiencies in the existing police station, which made the building unsuitable for the needs of the nation and the police force, STGM Architecture was entrusted with the mandate to design a new building. This new building was to take into account the latest trends in office design as well as the most recent public safety standards and regulations.
Integration with the Built Heritage
Harmoniously integrated into the surrounding landscape and respecting the local architecture of the village, the new 534 m² single-story police station houses various administrative services, such as a reception area, the police chief's office, and a conference room. It also includes an interrogation room, six cells—including one specifically for young detainees—a guard post, an outdoor yard for detainees, and other amenities like storage spaces, locker rooms, and a kitchen.
Recognized Expertise in Public Safety
Meticulous work was done to optimize the interior layout, traffic flow, and acoustics, while taking into account the building's size limitations and ensuring the security and confidentiality of the premises.
In addition to its aesthetics, which are in perfect harmony with the natural environment, the choice of a light-frame wood structure, combined with the use of prefabrication techniques, gives the building remarkable ecological qualities. This prefabrication approach made it possible to assemble the walls off-site, where materials and labor are more readily available, and then transport the assembled modules to Northern Quebec. This resulted in substantial savings in both cost and time.
