Gwacheon Galhyeon-dong is a quiet neighborhood nestled at the foot of Gwanak Mountain. The entire site is surrounded by a forest, creating a serene atmosphere. But the site can also feel too enclosed by the large mountains. We started the design with the question of how to address this characteristic location.
There are almost no houses nearby, and an old, well-grown ginkgo tree guarded the corner of the site, symbolizing the entrance to the house but also potentially blocking the view. We had to carefully balance the new design and the tree. A stream flowing westward through the site acts like a vein, opening the enclosed land.
Recently, a large office town has been under construction to the south, bringing sudden changes. Considering the mountains and fields behind the house and a large-scale city on the other side of the road, we planned a house with interconnected spaces. These interconnected spaces scheme allows for smooth circulation and communication. We devised a central layout with a light well to supply light and air to the house and views in all directions.
The couple who commissioned the design had worked hard all their lives and recently sent their children off to live independently. They wanted to create new memories here as a family again.
The program consists of a ground floor with a parking area and a family living room, a second floor with a kitchen and the main bedroom, and a third floor with a gym and guest room, totaling three floors. Private and public spaces alternate, so we chose a layout where the external and internal routes intersect. Independent access to each floor is possible via external stairs, allowing for a natural connection between the second and third-floor yards.
A small entrance courtyard surrounded by the ginkgo tree faces the main entrance and a separate entrance for family and friends. Upon entering the living room, a private garden starts from the west and connects to the north, surrounding the house.
The central space on the second floor is the kitchen and dining area, originally planned as a courtyard but changed to an internal space with skylights. Considering each spouse's hobbies, we placed a garden in front of the wife's bedroom and a city view to the husband's bedroom.
The third-floor gym faces Gwanak Mountain, and the guest room is used as a study room but can be used independently when the children visit. Direct access is possible via external stairs, and the overlapping yard spaces allow family members to maintain their distance while visually connected to each other.
Thus, the configuration of the design is to modernize the layout of the traditional Korean family house through vertical divisions and layers. The ourdoor yards of each floor will also be transformed into new forms, finding its own purpose through diffferent application.
