The nation’s first Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum law firm Fenwick & West’s Seattle office space was designed by SkB. To achieve the designation, 22.3% of building materials were recycled, 65% of the wood was sustainably harvested and 80% of the concrete flooring tile was recycled.
Aside from recycled materials, the designers took special care to keep the toxicity of materials minimal or non-existent. SkB was tasked with ensuring the offices didn’t look like a stereotypical sustainable design. The goal was to create an elegant, inviting space for employees and clients alike.
It was important that elements like the furniture were built locally, adding a different dimension of sustainability. But perhaps the greenest element was not something tactile that could be touched. The light that floods the entire space really allows those in the office to experience sustainability differently. From floor-to-ceiling window and transparent glass walls between offices to the 2,700 square foot outdoor deck space, the desire to incorporate natural light is obvious.
The outdoor space sets Fenwick & West apart from other firms across the country. It blends the indoors and outdoors serving as an entertaining and workspace. Even when the weather does not permit being outdoors the large glass walls bring a feeling of the outdoors in.
