Finca El Refugio
Finca El Refugio is conceived as a tropical oasis—an immersive environment where architecture, landscape, and wellness converge in the heart of Santa Teresa. Located just a ten-minute walk from the beach, the project positions itself as a quiet sanctuary, dedicated to nature, local fauna, and the slow rhythms of its surroundings.
At its core, the main structure is composed of repurposed shipping containers, carefully adapted to respond to the demands of the tropical climate. This strategy not only informs the project’s construction logic but also establishes a resilient architectural language—one that balances efficiency, durability, and openness. The containers are transformed through a series of precise interventions, resulting in a spatial composition that feels both grounded and expansive.
The primary façade opens generously through large sliding glass panels, dissolving the boundary between interior and exterior. This transparency allows the surrounding gardens to become an integral part of the living experience, while promoting cross ventilation and constant natural light. Inside, the material palette is defined by finely crafted white polished concrete floors, made from a mixture of cement and locally sourced white stone from the Nicoya region. This subtle texture reflects light softly, enhancing the sense of calm and continuity throughout the space.
A heightened ceiling—beyond standard proportions—further amplifies the interior atmosphere, allowing heat to rise and reinforcing a natural cooling effect. The architecture breathes through its verticality, remaining in constant dialogue with the lush vegetation that envelops it.
Outdoor living is central to the project. Expansive decks and terraces extend the interior program outward, framing views of the pool and layered tropical gardens. These spaces are designed not as secondary elements, but as essential components of daily life—places for gathering, resting, and reconnecting with the environment.
The program is organized with clarity and flexibility. A primary bedroom anchors the private areas, complemented by a secondary room that can function as a guest bedroom, studio, or workspace. A shared bathroom serves these spaces, while the social core of the house is defined by an open kitchen. At its center, a sculptural island—also executed in white polished concrete—acts as both functional hub and architectural focal point.
Finca El Refugio ultimately proposes a way of living that is deeply rooted in its context: an architecture that is at once simple and intentional, where material honesty, climate responsiveness, and landscape integration come together to create a serene and cohesive spatial experience.
