From former monastery to education campus
The new knowledge campus for Breda University of Applied Sciences (BUas) in the Netherlands was designed through a collaborative effort between INBO and CULD. The integrated approach combined overall strategic positioning, planning, architecture, and landscape design into a compelling and cohesive design proposal, unifying two existing school buildings, the monastery, the chapel and the surrounding grounds.
The design reflects the client’s belief that learning is a collaborative endeavor. Within ‘learning communities’, students, lecturers, and professionals work together to tackle complex societal challenges. The students are at the center of the professional landscape. The campus is designed to facilitate and encourage encounters, interaction, cooperation and creativity, with a variety of spaces that spark collaboration on every turn.
The aim was to create a sustainable campus that thoughtfully bridges historic heritage with cutting-edge innovation. This green transformation carefully balances environmental responsibility with technological advancement, giving new life to existing structures while meeting the highest standards of modern education.
The monastery's central atrium serves as the vibrant heart of the campus. Its former courtyard has been transformed into a covered, multifunctional hub for learning, anchored by a food court and library. Meanwhile, the historic nunnery rooms have been adaptively reused as modern educational spaces, including classrooms, study areas, and collaborative work environments.
The adjacent chapel has been sensitively converted into a modern lecture hall, where state-of-the-art facilities now harmonize with carefully preserved historic elements. This thoughtful transformation maintains the building's spiritual character while meeting contemporary academic needs.
To maximize green space, the central parking area was relocated to the site's perimeter. This strategic move enabled the creation of an informal park featuring hilly topography, mature tree plantings, social gathering areas, and sports facilities. Meandering informal pathways invite exploration of the landscaped areas, while direct routes maintain efficient circulation from surrounding access points.
The design strengthens the connection between architecture and landscape, blending indoor and outdoor spaces while celebrating the unique character of each building: the airy, spacious floors of the Frontier Building and the more intimate security of the Ocean building. Complementing conventional classrooms, the campus boasts innovative learning spaces like a virtual reality stage, advanced labs, a startup accelerator, studios, and a competitive e-sports arena.
