Until a few years ago, the geometry of buildings depended on water levels. Wall planes or the verticality of a pillar were checked by means of water ‘levels’. To bring a certain height from one place to another, water hoses were used to take advantage of the qualities enunciated by the theory of communicating vessels.
The horizon of the sea has marked in the landscape the contrast to the vertical position of man and his constructions. Geometry, as we know it today, starts in nature from the different forms of water, I believe that the only flat forms in nature are found in bodies of water, such as the surface of the sea. Movement, and therefore time, are part of this quality of flowing without pause that is transmitted to the architecture of this singular corner of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
The whimsical, organic forms introduce us to the analysis of one of the most important trends of the Modern Movement. Architects such as Fermín Suárez Valido established this organic architecture based on the material and formal tradition of his ancestors. The renovation and extension project proposed by Romera y Ruiz arquitectos seeks to promote greater integration with the nature that gave rise to it.
