The competition consisted in developping an innovative urban project on an existing site with conversion of land into a residential area guaranteeing a high quality of life for future residents.
The project "CityZen" is integrated by its form and its uses into the existing surroundings. The topography is conserved and valued, the vegetation created clings to the existing woodlands and forms an ecological continuity. The axes and views are oriented to benefit from the sun and the landscape.
Three districts with different atmospheres were created: the district “des Jardins” (gardens) with urban agriculture, the district “du Parc” (park), which will house a school, and the district “des Sports” (sports), in tribute to the history of the site. These three neighborhoods are connected by the new public square “Josy Barthel”, a meeting and gathering place, backed by the more intimate and landscaped square “Place des Arts”, surrounded by buildings, some of which are heritage buildings, with a cultural vocation.
Everywhere, soft mobility is favored. Cars are encouraged to stay as much as possible outside the site, in car parks located on the outer fringes. The districts cross the road “rue d’Arlon” and encourage a calming down of traffic on this section, which is also served by the tram.
Thanks to its different atmospheres, its mixed functions, the right balance between nature and construction, the place given to people and the continuous attention to sustainability, the future district will be a place of urban life respectful of its inhabitants and the environment.
