The house was built in the 1930s by the great-grandparents of the current owners. Until 1963, it was run by their grandparents. From 1963 to 1985, the house was operated as the “Pensione al Sole” under lease. Between 1986 and 2014, it was used as a holiday home for families and young people, run by the parish of Cavriago (RE). From 2015 to 2019, the building served as accommodation for refugees.
The current owners decided to renovate the house and take over its operation themselves. After years of planning, renovation work began in January 2020, and Casa al Sole opened its doors to guests on 7 August 2020.
Throughout the renovation, great care was taken to preserve and restore the original fabric of the building. In order to provide the rooms with private bathrooms and integrate a lift, precise, almost surgical interventions were carried out. The use of raw steel makes the interventions clearly legible: new walls, shifted openings and closed doorways remain visibly traceable. Where walls were removed, the resulting interventions in the original floors were likewise executed in raw steel, leaving them visible like scars.
The historic windows and doors were carefully restored, as were the original wooden staircase and flooring.
The interior design is deliberately restrained in its use of materials, forms and colour. Restored historic furniture from the 1930s was introduced as a subtle counterpoint, adding character and creating carefully placed accents.
Particular attention was given to the lighting, which was conceived as an integral element of the architectural intervention.
