TEREM, an interactive space of Bortársaság
Terem is located in a former Agricultural Book Shop, near the Parliament. It functions as a wine shop as well as a space for meetings, conferences, wine school and wine tastings. It is like a living room where wine-loving people meet up, talk, learn, taste and relax. The customer is Bortársaság, a popular Hungarian chain of wine-shops. Becoming familiar with the concept of the place spora suggested an industrial loft, with a ‘Meatpacking district’ sort of atmosphere. The basic concept was to create a friendly, homey environment, using natural materials, wood, steel, brick and colourful furniture. The space is not supposed to be linked to wine through direct references, more through creating the sort of space, atmosphere and background that we think is needed for today’s wine tasting, friendly meetings, chats and such gatherings and events. Being so, the focus is on the wine and people here, and architecture stays in the background. Taking advantage of a place’s existing parameters allows for a very straightforward and economical design. The space here is framed by the steel block of the counter and the wooden paneling with shelves on the opposite wall. All the electric wires are hidden inside and the lighting integrated into these objects, at the same time they are designed to define the space. The original ceiling is a natural brick vault with steel beams, which has been cleaned and conserved. The individual letters of a neon script originally advertising the shop have been put on the ceiling as lamps. The the text is MENŐGAZDA, which means about „cool farmer”.
