Program Summary:
Bank OZK Headquarters’ sharp outcropped edges, flowing form, and quartz-like glass stairs evoke imagery of its namesake Ozark mountains, while firmly reflecting a rapid national expansion with a timeless, modernist clarity intended to attract talent, foster collaboration, and engage community.
Program Statement:
With humble beginnings in a small town of 3500 nestled in Arkansas’ Ozark Mountains as Bank of the Ozarks, the now rebranded Bank OZK is one of the nation’s fastest growing banks with offices from Manhattan to San Francisco. Rapid expansion required a new headquarters that anticipates growth, and as importantly a progressive architecture that welcomes clients and recruits nationwide, while still grounded firmly in place, the foothills near its namesake mountains in Arkansas’ capital.
Located between parallel ridges, the 44-acre site’s walkable master plan centers on environmentally sound principals with a collaborative focus blurring inside/out, making the campus a place of work, respite, and interaction with nature. A 388-car deck bunkered under the building against the sloping grade is rendered undetectable, creating a public engagement through a sculpted, artistic landscape. This park-like green the building bridges attracts wildlife within steps of associates.
The building’s sweeping roof bridges a five-story atrium, a symbol of speed, movement, and financial prowess, shaped to perfectly match the surrounding rolling hills; the building becomes a man-made ridge. The atrium serves as a vertical conference center, with bluff-like cantilevered rooms highlighting beautiful views and linking office wings and two distinct green spaces. With a focus on hospitality, the atrium’s social hub serves employee and public events, and is a vertical gallery for an extensive art collection. The building stretches east-west with deep horizontal blades on the south, and vertical fritted glass fins on east and west to mitigate glare and heat gain. Incredibly, the headquarters and 40 branches are 100% solar powered, taking the building off the grid. 95% of employees sit within 35 feet of windows overlooking greenspaces instead of the normal sea of parking. The curving roof with clerestories reaches up across the atrium to connect level five’s leadership to associate floors below... a symbol of openness and accessibility.
Bank OZK’s Headquarters doesn’t sway with the winds of latest architectural trends, but strives for a timeless, modernist clarity through cleans lines and open spaces that will be relevant for the next 50 years, modelling the bank’s progressive principals and continued success.
