In May 2016, the Shaanxi Cotton Factory No. 8 in Xianyang, which has a history of more than 80 years ceased production. According to the Planning Bureau, Xianyang Weicheng Middle School will be relocated to this new site. The entire school has a scale of 72 classes, and more than 3600 students.
The new middle school campus utilizes the old factory buildings and eventually transforms parts of weaving workshops into art centers and transforms a packing workshop next to it into a school history museum.
First is the weaving workshop transformation, with a depth and width of about 100m, the interior of the workshop remains an open and clean status. We selectively retained a five-span structure of the whole building, three spans are indoor spaces, and two spans are open spaces with roofs. The original sawtooth bent structure, beams, and concrete roof panels are retained, and reinforcement measures are taken. To fully use the space height of 15m, two additional floors are added using steel structures. The original large space is vertically and horizontally divided into small spaces with pleasant dimensions, creating spaces for exhibitions and open classes in the art center.
The packing workshop is located on the east side of the production workshop and is a single-story building built in 1934. The structure is still in good condition. Considering the least possible damage to the original brick masonry and window openings, an internal insulation system was adopted. The original open straight staircase is wrapped in a perforated aluminum panel curtain wall, and the newly added steel ladder is wrapped in a glass curtain wall. The interior decoration and exhibition design are synchronized, and protective measures have been taken for the wall paintings and slogans in the original factory building wall.
