The APL Factory is the most recent and prominent addition to an existing campus visible from Hamilton’s busy Wairere Drive. On a small site, the design sought to maximise the building’s footprint, while pursing generous architectural gestures. The key driver behind the project was to raise the profile of the APL brand and to create a physical transparency to their business. The simple architectural form contains offices, warehousing and manufacturing for multiple business units.
This form is punctuated with bold gestures that are avenues to test and celebrate product development. These are set into a deliberately simple and strong palette of materials that allows the quality of detailing to shine. The building contains a high-level of sustainable measures, utilising both cutting-edge technology and architectural responses to aid in its ‘performance’.
