Located on an empty parade in ground in Shahibaug, north of the historic town centre, the new Ahmedabad Commissioner of Police Office responds to the aspirations the Gujarat State Police Housing Corporation to create a building that is at once:
- a contemporary place of work
- an accessible welcoming place dedicated to public service
- a modern image of a government institution
Breaking away from tendencies to spread the 28,000m² programme over the expanse of the triangular 2.6Ha site, the 10-storey building seeks to be as compact as possible while expressing a clear formal intention.
The building mass is composed of a sculpted 45m cube asymmetrically placed above an elongated 2-storey high podium running parallel to the main Road. The architectural treatment of the facades further reinforces this visual dichotomy. Stone cladding is proposed to create perception of a solid protective enclosure. Above, glass curtain wall, metal cladding and fine vertical brises soleil are preferred to project an image of transparency and lightness.
The ground floor houses public related functions organized along a covered internal street and alternating patios. Associated support offices of respective section are located directly above on first floor. The internal street also leads to the heart of the building where common facilities are grouped together - conference rooms, press rooms, library as well as a state of the art centralized control room. The more private administrative section, including the Commissioner’s office, is placed in upper levels from the second to the tenth floor.
The complex is served by different entry points:
- a general public entrance to the north facing the Sabarmati River accessible from the main road
- a more discrete formal entrance and drop-off area for dignitaries on the west side of the site
- a logistics entrance to the south
