SKYnoa is honored to have been invited as spatial experts to redesign the Adidas Originals shoe area within their Chengdu Taikoo Li store. The Originals location is the No.1 sales area globally and has high impotency to the brand and Swire Properties.
For this unique location, our design endeavors to preserve the site's heritage and uphold local authenticity through a contrasting yet compelling conceptual design, that bridges the past with the future. We wanted to introduce more sophistication and artfulness through transparency, contrast, and texture, whilst always staying authentic to the local culture. The goal was to improve and create a movable architectural gesture to improve the shopper’s experience through the integration of modern design and the presentation of a contemporary art gallery style atmosphere within Chinese architecture. Following the same as Taikoo Li's architectural approach, to blend seamlessly preserve and celebrate ancient elements while embracing modernity with confidence.
The design respects the integrity of the architecture of the heritage site. The free-standing display structures create a strong contrast with the space and its heritage building and allows the framing to really pop out. Minimal display design and the usage of “honest” materials help the product to stand out.
Through one push or pull, the dynamic fixture system unfolds into a series of wall elements within the space and when it folds it becomes a flat pack cubical. This new modular system gives the opportunity for the viewer to appreciate the existing heritage architecture while browsing through the newest collection of ORIGNAL shoes.
The whole idea to this product display and artwork is to create the feeling of a commercial art gallery space, making the customer want to explore and showcasing each shoe as a piece of art.
With the chosen materials SKYnoa also wanted to represent modernity, symbolizing the alternation and integration of old and new. Emphasize spatial environment through the mix of opaque and transparency, warm wood and cool galvanized metal, as well as solid and mesh-see through panels. With a few accents of pop color, such as the carpet and the seating throughout, we wanted to create a cohesive dynamic from the interior and product display to the overall look and feel of the space.
