SCT Estudio de Arquitectura was founded in 1996 by Ángel Sánchez-Cantalejo and Vicente Tomás. After 25 years we have had the opportunity to work with many different projects, from single family homes, residential buildings, boutique hotels, urban and resort hotels, healthcare buildings, a ferry terminal, an art museum, institutional buildings, … In SCT Estudio de Arquitectura we create architecture with local inspiration to build contemporary global architecture.
We feel like an architectural design is a process. And, for every design, there is a theoretical introduction and a romantic idea. There’s always a reality: what the terrain is like, where the site is located, its orientation, what the views are, what the landscape is like, the vegetation, the cultural context, etc.; and then there’s the idea you imagine for that reality: forms, materials, spaces, etc. And of course, there is the programme from the client: we want to know about how they’re living and how they would like to live. From there, the creative process begins.
Although no one design is the same as another and we have taken an interest in approaching very different typologies, if there’s something we have always tried to do it is to get rid of anything superfluous in the design, so we’re left only with what is necessary to get what we want. On a conceptual level, we like clear and compelling forms, with a particular interest in massing – pure volumes that are twinned, that overlap or are that layered one on top of the other – as well as the composition of proportion. We study proportions in depth because they help us organize the designs. Order is important to us, as is simplicity – a limited range of materials that harmonise with one another other, controlled colours, etc. – along with balance and timelessness.
