The Gyuujoo house in Bojeong-dong is located within a suburban housing complex in Yongin. The clients, a couple in their early 40s, are a family with two daughters who dream of a cozy life with a private yard in a detached house. When the housing complex was developed, the land had a 7-8 meter elevation difference between the front road and the rear of the plot. To the left of the site, there is a terrace-block townhouse, while to the right, a four-story detached house fills the entire plot, with two underground floors supported by a retaining wall.
The design process began by considering these different contextual factors, such as the contrasting neighboring properties and the elevation change between the front and rear of the plot.
In terms of sunlight and the desired south-facing yard, the yard was placed not at the highest point at the rear of the site (+7 meters from the front road), but at the 3-meter level above the underground parking space. This location allowed the yard to be naturally enclosed by the neighboring plot's underground retaining wall, creating a cozy and intimate space.
The entrance to the residence from the front road (underground) was visually kept open to avoid creating a boundary with the road, reducing the feeling of being underground. On the first floor, which is closest to the yard and outdoor spaces, the LDK (Living, Dining, Kitchen) area is placed, visually connecting and expanding the space naturally. The second floor features a family room that also functions as a study, rooms for the two daughters, and a cozy master bedroom for the couple, designed as a separate annex that creates a distinct, peaceful atmosphere different from the first floor.
