The Willow Creek Residence renovation transforms several areas of a modern California home. Completed in 2019, the project breathes new life into the primary suite, the kitchen, and a lower-level Rumpus room and redefining each space with functionality, modernity, and the owners’ personal style.
One of the main design objectives of renovating the Willow Creek Residence included designing a luxurious and spacious primary suite where the owners could retreat and relax. The space originally comprised of two cramped bedrooms and baths. Now, after a dramatic transformation, the primary bedroom and bathroom evokes an airy, expansive sense of space. The primary bathroom shower occupies the footprint of one of the previous bathrooms.
To enable an open and spacious layout, this room necessitated the installation of a new structural flitch beam at the ridge in order to eliminate existing walls that previously supported the ridge. Interiors are rich, warm, and inviting, featuring: White Oak flooring in the bedroom, natural walnut millwork throughout, Heath tile in the shower, painted wall paneling, American Clay plaster walls, and wheat board ceiling panels concealing a new roof insulation. New plumbing fixtures in unlacquered brass complement the warm woods and various textures. Additionally, a custom bed gives new purpose to a reclaimed Claro Walnut slab.
The new Rumpus room renovates a primary garage space and provides a dedicated space for entertainment for the family, combining elements of a game room, home theater, music room, and pilates studio. Designed for hosting slumber parties and movie nights, the room features a concealed movie screen that drops from the ceiling in front of a large north-facing window, as well as spacious seating and sleeping areas, including custom built-in bunk beds.
The renovation involved removing a roof extension to accommodate a new kitchen and bath. The design also adds a 2,000-bottle wine cellar adjacent to the Rumpus room. Simultaneously, an existing masonry space was repurposed into a functional workshop.
Key elements of the renovation included retaining the exposed CMU wall to divide the main room from the kitchen area. Carefully selected finishes make the space warm, yet playful, including Douglas fir acoustic ceiling and wall slats, White Oak flooring, painted cabinetry, rotary cut Douglas fir plywood walls, painted concrete tile, and natural White Oak cabinetry.
The kitchen received a facelift that refreshed appliances and interiors. Highlights included new island cabinetry, repainted existing cabinets, a powder-coated range hood, Heath backsplash tile, upgraded plumbing fixtures, and new hardware.
