Western University’s Weldon Library, a brutalist landmark, is undergoing a multi-phase interior renewal that transforms the building into a contemporary centre for academic life. The project strengthens teaching, learning, research, and staff operations while improving equity, wellness, and accessibility. It advances sustainability by adapting the existing structure rather than constructing new space, all while the library remains operational.
Phase 1 reconceives the former Great Hall as a bright, daylit Learning Commons. A new feature stair reconnects the mezzanine, while varied settings support study, collaboration, exhibition, and social activity. Compact shelving in the basement consolidates collections and releases perimeter daylight for learning environments. Staff functions are unified in an activity-based workplace on Level 5, complemented by shared amenities. A Community Room, Family Room, gender neutral washrooms, Access Lab, and Learning Opportunities Lab expand programming and improve universal accessibility. Integrated acoustics, interior planting, and a variety of student-tested furniture support neurodiverse users and different modes of learning, complemented by a new lighting layer that enlivens the existing waffle slab.
Phase 2 advances the transformation with specialized spaces for focused study and emerging scholarship. A Silent Study Room and a Graduate Commons provide dedicated settings for advanced academic work. The Digital Scholarship Centre adds a Maker Space, Media Lab, and a Primary Source Active Learning Classroom supporting hands on experimentation and interdisciplinary exploration. Additional study environments, enhanced display zones, and collections optimization extend strategies introduced in Phase 1. Circulation aligns with natural light and views, placing open programs at windows and moving enclosed rooms inward to maintain openness and clarity.
Across both phases, flexible furnishings, integrated biophilia, and abundant power and data support evolving technologies and learning behaviours. The renewal preserves embodied carbon, extends the building’s life, and reinforces Western’s commitment to interdisciplinary exploration while honoring the strength of the original design.
