In 2014, the architect-owners of this project left their cherished studio apartment—originally designed by mid-century architect Harwell Hamilton Harris—in search of a more suitable home for their growing family. Their deep knowledge of and commitment to the neighborhood enabled them to purchase an unusually wide lot, which they then subdivided in partnership with neighbors into two narrow parcels.
The north lot presented both opportunities and constraints. Mature Live Oaks surrounded the site, and along with zoning setbacks and parking requirements, dictated a compact building footprint. The resulting home takes the form of a vertically clad wood volume housing four bedrooms above a more agile, open-plan ground floor wrapped in mill-finished steel panels.
The design is guided by a commitment to compact, efficient living—deeply attuned to its natural surroundings and enriched by subtle textures and carefully considered details.
